Social Media and the election - Morgan PR on Newbury Sound

When Newbury Sound contacted Morgan PR to ask me to give an interview about how social media and public relations impact on the election, I realised that in one way or another I have been involved in general elections since 1987 – and there can be no doubt how different the internet is going to make this election.
Indeed we have once again been asked to cover the election count in Newbury on May 6th for a news agency. I have covered Newbury several times, other constituencies too, both as a police press officer and of course as a journalist.
In the interview below the News Editor of Newbury Sound, Helen Ainsworth questions me on the impact of social media on the forthcoming general election and the importance of good public relations to the party leaders and the local candidates.
The election campaign offers terrific public relations opportunities for businesses prepared to give interviews to the media. Think about how you would like to comment on issues that your local candidates are concerned about – or are ignoring.
Also, if you are a blogger then writing about the election is likely to attract readers to visit your website. Use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to promote any blogs you write – and don’t forget to contact your local media, not least your radio station!
What do you think about the issues I raised in the interview? Do you agree? Disagree? How do you think the politicians should use social media during the general election?
